Police Recover Stolen Madonna Painting
Why should that title belong to a knitting blog? Well, you might ask.
According to a RTE news article, the painting at left above by daVinci was stolen in 2003 by thieves disguised as tourists. Called the Madonna of the Yarnwinder, the painting on the left was on display at a Scottish castle when stolen. The painting on the right is the American version.
You’ll note that the yarn winder is shaped like a cross - thus the religious connection.
However, in searching for a better picture to show, I came across mention of Meister Bertram’s Knitting Madonna, the Visit of the Angels as discussed in The History of Knitting.
I couldn’t find a picture of that painting, but found the following:
She’s using 4 needles - AND - is knitting in purple - a favorite color of mine. How perfect.
I suddenly find myself singing Knitting Madonna (Lady Madonna . . .) a version only in my head. You may thank me later for that when you sit down for a cuppa. Haha.
But, now you tell me . . . when the Lord’s mother crosses your mind - do you see her sitting and knitting? Nope, I guess I never did, either. But it only stands to reason that she had a hand in making the clothes she and Joseph and Jesus wore, right?
According to the History of Knitting, some of the first knitting came from Egypt - all together with me now, where did Joseph take his family to escape the king? Right - Egypt! So, that could be where Mary learned to knit items for her family.
Well, it makes for good conversation at any rate. Guess away, friends. Guess away.
And, with that, I need to hit the hay - 5 am comes awfully early and I need to be up and bright eyed for swimming with the daughter.

Too Cool… to think our Saviour’s mom was a knitter. Or at least in this picture. It does make you stop and think. All those sheep.. all the wool? Purple is one of my fav’s also. It was wonderful to meet you on saturday. It sounds like you made the rounds. The yarn branch is more commercial than Zaynab’s. I try and go there only when I can’t find what I’m looking for at “The Grounds or another LYS run by knitters. I’ve been pretty busy at work and trying to catch up on my bible study so I haven’t had a chance to post my pictures of us but I will. I like your bar on subscribing.. I belong to blogline and My Yahoo… so I will add you to those tabs.. although I love getting your update in my yahoo email..it’s so easy. Well have a great day.. and keep the interesting articles coming.
Bless you,
Linda
