Knitted Breasts
Yes that’s right, I said it! Believe me if this weren’t important and for a good cause I would never have mentioned it.
But seeing as how an estimated 178,480 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in American women in 2007 alone, and many of those will have one or both breasts removed, (and as I am not a fan of implants personally), here is the latest in how knitting is contributing to the well being of breast cancer survivors. The designer is a cancer survivor, and has her own site here.
But that’s not all!
Knitted breast prostheses are also being made to help new moms learn to express their milk! This is especially beneficial for mothers of premature babies to express milk to help build their babies’ strength. So for your next preemie project, make a hat and a breast for twice as much benefit!
I didn’t think it was possible to love knitting even more… but now I do!

This is a great idea. My mom is a breast cancer survivor and I can definitely see how useful these could be.

That’s wild, but sounds very interesting. Deanna, my mom is also a breast cancer survivor.

Hee! That’s awesome! I’ve seen a pattern for a knitted uterus (with fallopian tubes and everything!)…now we could make the whole Lady Parts set.
Nice.

Yeah I saw that too. There’s also a racy “woman parts” purse at theanticraft.com, although you wouldn’t know what it was right away unless you heard the podcast about it on Brenda Dayne’s Cast-On.

I am a 2X breast cancer survivor and my best friend is now battling her 2nd round with it. I want to knit her an afghan with the breast cancer ribbon in it- do you know if there is such a pattern and if so where can I find it. Thank you so much

You could make multiples of this one http://www.craftbits.com/viewProject.do?projectID=846
and then sew them together, or if you send me your email by way of my other blog at http://justfibers.blogspot.com I’ll design one for you.
